A Greener Glasgow

Pauline and Cllr Simpson, campaigning for recycling roll-out

"Cllr Ruth Simpson joins my greener Glasgow campaign"

I have campaigned relentlessly for the roll-out of recycling provision to all parts of Glasgow Kelvin, regardless of whether the housing is detached and semi-detached, tenemental or in high flats.  Glasgow’s record on providing environmentally friendly services has not in the past been as good as it should have been, but the issues are not as clear cut as many make out.   Our city needs to find more innovative solutions, which work in all housing types and across the wide diversity of prosperity and economic disadvantage, than in any other part of the country and that is why I led the campaign in the Scottish Parliament for more recycling funding for Glasgow.  So that we could have a full system of kerbside and backcourt recycling collections and the appropriate narrow gauge recycling trucks to navigate tight back lanes of Scotstoun and other areas.

I am delighted that my lobbying is paying off and that more and more people are getting the opportunity to do their bit, by recycling as well as reducing and reusing. But now that collections and bring sites are being improved I am turning my attention to other forms of recyclables, such as cardboard, which is not currently easy to recycle in Glasgow.

Standing up for the West End

In recent years I have become increasingly concerned about the way the West End is being developed with an over emphasis on pubs and clubs and an unsustainable housing mix threatening our open spaces and the still essentially residential nature of the area.

Housing for all

Probably the major challenge facing Glasgow Kelvin is in the area of housing.  Unlike other parts of the city, the central and west area faces an acute shortage of affordable homes to both rent and buy.
